Singapore’s HIV epidemic is classified as a low-level epidemic. The first case of HIV was diagnosed in Singapore in 1985. Since then, the cumulative total number of HIV-infected Singapore residents has increased from 2 in 1985 to a cumulative total of 4,159 as of 30 June 2009.

The number of newly-diagnosed cases in 2006 was 357, compared to 317 cases in 2005. Between January and June 2007, another 164 Singapore residents were detected to be HIV-infected.

The National AIDS Control Programme focuses on HIV education and prevention for the general population as well as specific at-risk groups, reducing the pool of undiagnosed HIV-infected individuals, and providing care and support to those living with HIV/AIDS.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains an important public health challenge in Singapore. The number of newly diagnosed HIV-infected cases has been steadily increasing over the past decade, mirroring the trend in other Asian countries.

380 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections were reported among Singapore residents[1] in the first 10 months (January – October) of 2015. Of these, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has performed further analysis for 144 cases reported within the first 6 months (January – June) of 2015.

The first NBSS on HIV/AIDS 2007, a large population-based survey, obtained statistics on awareness, attitudes, and perceptions about HIV/AIDS and sexual practices among Singaporeans.

At the 2011 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AIDS that took place in June in New York, Member States adopted a new Political Declaration which contained new targets to effectively respond to the AIDS epidemic.
