Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This report presents the indicator and monitoring framework for the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, (2016-2030) focusing on its Survive, Thrive and Transform objectives and 17 targets. The report details the selection process for the indicators and implications for monitoring, measurement, investments and reporting.

This Operational Framework is intended to accompany the Global Strategy and to serve as a resource for national governments and the wide diversity of stakeholders within countries whose contributions are vital to improving the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents – including civil society, the private sector and development partners.

This report assesses the worldwide state of readiness to begin monitoring of progress using the Indicator and Monitoring Framework of the Global Strategy.

This updated Global Strategy, spanning the 15 years of the SDGs, provides guidance to accelerate momentum for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health. It should achieve nothing less than a transformation in health and sustainable development by 2030 for all women, children and adolescents, everywhere.

This report captures the main lessons learned from the MDG Acceleration Reviews that took place under the auspices of the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) from April 2013 through November 2015.

The world cannot afford to start over with the SDGs – but must build on the improvements made under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Progress will only be significant enough to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if leaders avoid the temptation to start from scratch.

“Leave no one behind” is a core principle of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Equity, human rights and gender equality are central to all the goals, while SDG 3 calls for universal health coverage and health and well-being for all at all ages. To realize this inclusive vision, we have to ensure that everyone makes it on to the bus of the SDGs – by using new approaches and tools that help us identify, and then address, health inequity.

This document can guide country stakeholders in conducting a systematic situation assessment that will enable them to prioritize adolescent health within their national policy processes.
