On 1 February 2010, the Crimes Decree 2009 (Decree No. 44) of the Republic of Fiji Islands took effect. A report on sex work and HIV prevention in Fiji had very recently been released. UNAIDS Pacific funded the authors of that report to conduct follow-up research investigating any impacts of the new Decree on sex work and related HIV prevention activities. Thus, the original study was extended to encompass and take account of a changed legal environment. This report is the result.

In november and December 2010, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 18 women and 2 young men who had had sex for money in the previous 12 months. interviews took place in and around Port Vila, and were conducted in Bislama and in english. the interviews were designed to investigate the circumstances and context of local sex work in Port Vila.

The year 2010 has heralded similar challenges to the past five years for the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Fiji. However, the intensity of dynamic changes in the Ministry of Health has brought about a vision for the future and a focus on quality delivery of healthcare.

This report presents the results of the study entitled Discourses and Representations of HIV in Fiji and their Impact on the Experience of People Living with HIV and AIDS. This study was conducted in collaboration with the Reproductive Health Clinics of Suva, Lautoka and Labasa and the Fiji Network for People Living with HIV and AIDS (FJN+) between November 2007 and December 2008.

This report is designed to strengthen Fiji’s response to HIV and AIDS. The aim of our study was to provide useful data about how Fijians think of and manage their risks of sexual transmission of HIV. We used multiple research methods and instruments to investigate the cultural, cognitive, and behavioral factors that shape HIV and STI transmission risks in Fiji. For the sake of brevity, we did not include here research protocols and instruments, letters of introduction and research clearance, statements of informed consent, and the like, but they can be obtained upon request to UNDP.

The VAW project team was commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) South Pacific office in July 2010, to conduct a host of VAW activities as components of the Project in Fiji. This report is one of the main outcomes of that partnership between the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Science (formerly known as Fiji School of Medicine) /Fiji National University, Ministry of Health Fiji and WHO.

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) is an autonomous, multi racial non-governmental organization established in 1984. The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre is committed towards the elimination of violence against women in Fiji and the Pacific through the provision of crisis counseling and support services to women and children who are survivors of violence and advocating for policy and legislative changes through lobbying, training and networking and institutional support. The FWCC firmly believes in working under the rule of law, democracy and human rights.

2009 has been a very challenging year. However with the new and young team holding senior executive positions, we managed to provide the services expected of us.
This report records the activities of the Ministry of Health for the year 2009 covering the performance and achievements in programs and activities within the portfolio of the Ministry.

An orientation and consultation workshop was held in 23 February to discuss the preparation of the 2012 Global AIDS Response Progress Report. The 30 participants in the workshop were partners in the HIV response from the public sector (Ministries of Health, Youth, Education, Women & Social Welfare, and Labour), civil society, and multilateral organisations.

Over the last 20 years, violence against women (VAW) has been increasingly recognized as major health, human rights and development issues. The Secretary General’s In-depth Study on all forms of violence against women (A/61/122/Add.1, and Cor.1) recommends intensified action to eliminate violence against women at all levels. The General Assembly’s resolution urges United Nations (UN) entities to enhance coordination and intensify their efforts to eliminate violence against women in a more systematic, comprehensive and sustained way. It further calls upon UN entities to extend coordinated efforts to assist States in their efforts to eliminate violence against women.
