Report of a Consensus Workshop  HIV Estimates and Projections for Cambodia 2006 - 2012. National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STD (2007)

The Cambodian Demographic Health Survey (CDHS), conducted in 2005, included assessment of HIV infection status. The results of the survey, which was based on a household sampling methodology, were formally released by the National Institute of Statistics, Ministry of Planning, in April 2007. The estimated national prevalence of HIV infection among adults aged 15-49 was 0.6%, and was identical in males and females.

In Cambodia, sentinel surveillance data have been used to estimate national HIV prevalence and project trends in HIV and AIDS incidence and mortality. In 2006, Cambodia conducted its tenth round of HIV sentinel surveillance (HSS) in 22 of its 24 provinces and municipalities. The two sentinel groups surveyed were brothel-based female sex workers (FSWs) and pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics.

Cambodia has the highest Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) prevalence in Asia. The predominant mode of transmission is heterosexual, and active commercial sex and bridging networks are believed to have played an important role in rapid epidemic spread.

The objectives of this survey were: 1) to estimate the prevalence of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and related risk behaviors among three sentinel groups; 2) to estimate HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM); and 3) to provide data for planning and management of sexually transmitted infection (STI) control and prevention programs.

Epidemiological Fact Sheet on HIV and AIDS Pakistan 2008 Update. WHO, UNICEF and UNICEF (2008) In Cambodia, behavioral surveillance surveys (BSS) have been conducted regularly since 1997. These surveys have gathered data on sexual behaviors among brothel based sex workers, women working for beer companies, police, military and moto-taxi drivers in the same five provinces using a consistent methodology. For this year round (BSS VI), five new provinces were added to the sample.

WHO, UNICEF and UNICEF (2008) In Cambodia, sentinel surveillance data have been used to estimate national HIV prevalence and project trends in HIV and AIDS incidence and mortality. In 2006, Cambodia conducted its tenth round of HIV sentinel surveillance (HSS) in 22 of its 24 provinces and municipalities. The two sentinel groups surveyed were brothel-based female sex workers (FSWs) and pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics. Rapid HIV tests were performed in the provinces to measure seroprevalence and dried blood spot specimens were prepared for quality control retesting at the National Laboratory of Public Health.
