Bio Behavioural_Surveillance

This report provides biological and behavioral information on HIV among mine workers in Balochistan from a survey conducted in September 2011 in the mining areas of Muslim Bagh, Sorange and Mach. The purpose of the study was to collect, analyze and disseminate accurate information on the prevalence of key risk behaviors and of HIV among mine workers in order to deliver sustained and effective HIV prevention,treatment care and support services. A cross-sectional behavioral and biological survey was conducted among this group. Data were gathered from mine workers using a structured questionnaire.

More than 340 million cases of curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were estimated to have occurred worldwide in 1995. Previous studies have shown that the presence of other concomitant STIs increases the likelihood of HIV transmission. The first national study of STIs conducted in Pakistan in 2004 revealed a high burden of STIs among women selling sex.

2006_country_progress_report_pakistan Pakistan at present is categorized as "Low-Prevalence High Risk" country for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. According to the National AIDS Control Programme/Ministry of Health estimates using WHO/UNAIDS Epiforecast model the number of HIV infected individuals in Pakistan at the end of 2005 are between 70-80, 000 in a total population of 157 million, with a prevalence of 0.1% among general population.

In the last two decades, ‘concentrated epidemics’ of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have established in several high risk groups in Pakistan, including Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) and among men who have sex with men (MSM). To explore the transmission patterns of HIV infection in these major high-risk groups of Pakistan, 76 HIV samples were analyzed from MSM, their female spouses and children, along with 26 samples from a previously studied cohort of IDUs.

HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) transmission has been reduced by protected sex and screening of blood products and other body fluids in the developed countries. It has been reported that Pakistan is at high risk of HIV/ AIDS infection but presently the prevalence rate is considerably low. The number of reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Pakistan has been continuously increasing since 1987.

The 2006-07 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) is the largest householdbased survey ever conducted in Pakistan. Teams visited 972 sample points across Pakistan and collected data from a nationally representative sample of over 95,000 households. Such a large sample size was required to measure the maternal mortality ratio at the national level. In fact, this is the first survey that provides direct estimates of the maternal mortality ratio at the national level.

This report provides mapping, and biological and behavioral information of HIV related high risk groups
(HRGs) from the 2nd round of surveillance, conducted from July, 2006 – March, 2007 in Pakistan.

Phase one of this study consisted of a rapid, geographic mapping of four HRGs, including Female Sex
Workers (FSWs), Male Sex Workers (MSWs), Hijra Sex Workers (HSWs) and Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in 12 major cities across all four provinces.

The Master Plan for Drug Abuse Control 2010-2014 has been prepared by the Ministry of Narcotics Control and the Anti Narcotics Force, based on a consultative process through the Steering Committee led by the Anti Narcotics Force. Objectives have been defined and achievable targets set with emphasis on both supply and demand reduction activities. Lessons learnt from the implementation of the last Master Plan have been addressed. The Master Plan takes into account the impact of the worsening drug situation in Afghanistan during 2006 and 2007 resulting in an unprecedented increase in poppy cultivation.
