This is an official submission to the UNAIDS secretariat for the monitoring of progress towards the Declaration of Commitment unanimously adopted in the 2001 UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV and AIDS. This report is presented exactly as submitted by the country, without editing or other alteration. This and other member state submissions will form the basis of the Secretary-General’s report to the General Assembly in June as well as the 2008 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic which will be launched at the International AIDS Conference in August 2008. |

In Tuvalu there is no information on the prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To address this, the World Health Organization in the Western Pacific Regional has agreed to provide support for the implementation of the first round of Second Generation Surveillance in Tuvalu. The surveys consist of three components: HIV Sentinel Surveillance among pregnant women, STI Prevalence Survey among seafarers and Behavioural Surveillance among young people. The 2007 Tuvalu Demographic and Health Survey (2007 TDHS) is a nationally representative survey of 851 women aged 15–49 and 558 men aged 15 and over. The 2007 TDHS is the first for the country and one of four such studies conducted in the Pacific as part of the Asian Development Bank and Secretariat of the Pacific Community Pacific Demographic and Health Survey Pilot Project. The primary purpose of the 2007 TDHS was to furnish policy-makers and planners with detailed information on fertility, family planning, infant and child mortality, maternal and child health and nutrition, and knowledge of HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. |
