As part of efforts to tackle the HIV epidemic, the Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG) has endorsed a National Strategic Plan (NSP) for HIV and AIDS, 2006-2010. A planning exercise for the implementation of this plan is undertaken each year which aims to bring stakeholders together with the goal of developing an approved GoPNG HIV Development Budget and Plan for the coming year, containing details of funded activities to support NSP implementation. The new National HIV and AIDS Strategy, 2011-2015 seeks to build on past achievements and address shortcomings in PNG’s response to the HIV epidemic. The NHS replaces the National Strategic Plan on HIV/AIDS, 2006-2010 (NSP). The NHS is published as a separate document. This report provides STI and HIV related information compiled from four different databases at the NDOH in 2008. These databases include; (1) Routine HIV Case Reporting, (2) Routine Monthly HIV Testing, (3) Routine Monthly STI data through the National Health Information System (NHIS) database and (4) Routine Monthly HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Patient (ART) database. Information on Periodic HIV and STI sentinel surveillance activities conducted at selected ANC, STI, and TB clinics over a three (3) month period in 2008 and Behavioural Surveillance Surveys (BSS) among Oil Search Limited and WR Carpenter workers will be presented in the upcoming quarterly reports for 2009.
