midterm review_care_prevention_PLHIV_2010-1

With funding support from the European Commission (EC), the ICP project has been implemented since 2007 in Prey Veng, Kampong Chnnang, and Kampong Speu provinces. The project consists of homebased care (HBC); facilitation of access to care and treatment; provision of socio-economic support to PLHIV, OVC and their families; and stigma and discrimination reduction faced by PLHIV and OVC. Reviewing and documenting the mid-term project, relating to all relevant information regarding project implementation, is crucial in order to monitor progress and provide feedback to the project planner and implementer, so that revised interventions and better project implementation can be made.

The UN estimates that over the last few years between 15,000 - 20,000 people living with HIV die annually in Myanmar, because of lack of access to urgent lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Lives in the Balance outlines the situation for people affected by HIV and TB, with a special focus on multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), in Myanmar today.  It calls for urgent funding and assistance to be made available by the international donor community to help Myanmar dose the devastating gap between people's need and people's access to treatment for HIV and TB.

A Community Based Care and Support Model for Injecting Drug Users Living with HIV. Alliance (2008)With a population of approximately 2.4 million which is about 0.2 per cent of India’s population, Manipur ranks highest in HIV prevalence amongst the seven northeastern states of India. The adult HIV prevalence in Manipur (1.67 per cent) is even greater than the estimated national average (0.36 per cent). According to a recent report from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) – “...recent studies indicate that HIV prevalence has been stabilising, and states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Nagaland have started showing declining trends...” – it is to be noted here that Manipur does not figure among these states. Insurgency, high unemployment, poverty and easy availability of drugs leading to much other risky behaviour have all been contributing factors to high HIV prevalence.

“Valued Voices” GIPA Toolkit: A manual for the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS. Asia-Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS and Asia-Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organizations (2005)This toolkit has been written for anyone that wants to know more about GIPA – the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV and AIDS. It has been prepared by consultants working for the Asia-Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (APN+), with support from the Asia-Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organisations (APCASO) and the Seven Sisters Coalition. With this toolkit, this consortium aims to convince you that GIPA is both important and possible and to provide practical steps to strengthen the involvement of people living with HIV in the creation and implementation of AIDS policy and programs. GIPA is not an end in itself; it is a tool to enable us to achieve our ultimate goals: improving the quality of life of all people living with HIV in this region and preventing further HIV infections.
