The Asia-Pacific region is home to a large number of trans people; individuals whose gender identity, and/or expression of their gender, differs from social norms related to their gender of birth. Across the region it can be speculated that there are possibly 9-9.5 million trans people, though existing research is scattered and small scale, and is largely limited to trans women. Asia-Pacific research, again scattered and small-scale, indicates alarming numbers of trans women are HIV positive, with prevalence rates as high as 49 percent.

HIV Prevention_Programmes_among_FSWs_MSM_and_Transgenders_SriLanka

Sri Lanka continues to have very low HIV prevalence. The first HIV infection in the country was reported in 1987, and since 2009, a total of 1196 HIV infections and AIDS cases have been cumulatively reported in the country. As per the Report on HIV Estimates and Projections 2009, prepared by the National STD and AIDS Control Programme, HIV prevalence among the adult population is 0.02 percent, and an estimated 3,000 people are living with HIV and AIDS. There has been a steady increase in the number of reported cases over the years, in part due to the increase in HIV testing facilities and the availability of antiretroviral treatment.

The impact of the Thai Suppression of Human Trafficking Act BE 2551 (2008),associated policies and practices on the human rights of sex workers in Thailand. Our research did not set out to measure, prove or disprove the existence of human trafficking within the sex industry in Thailand. There is already a plethora of wildly contradictory reports on the subject. More significantly, as the leading sex worker organization working on the ground for the past 30 years, we already were well aware that human trafficking has been steadily disappearing from the sex industry in Thailand over the last 15 years. Instead we set out to measure the impact of anti trafficking law and practices on the human rights of women who are accused of being trafficked and other women who are not trafficked, but severely affected by anti-trafficking measures.

The UN estimates that over the last few years between 15,000 - 20,000 people living with HIV die annually in Myanmar, because of lack of access to urgent lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy (ART). Lives in the Balance outlines the situation for people affected by HIV and TB, with a special focus on multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), in Myanmar today.  It calls for urgent funding and assistance to be made available by the international donor community to help Myanmar dose the devastating gap between people's need and people's access to treatment for HIV and TB.

The objective of this report is to provide a rapid assessment of migration and mobility as key influences on the distribution and spread of HIV in the Pacific. While this has been established globally with targeted and tailored prevention programmes on mobility and HIV in a number of countries, the Pacific has yet to develop appropriate responses that take migration and mobility into consideration and ensure that HIV interventions address the drivers of mobility and the specific vulnerabilities that mobility creates.

Vietnam: HIV/AIDS TRaC Study among Injecting Drug Users in Mong Cai, Uong Bi, and Thai Nguyen City. DFID and PSI (2006)

Female sex workers (FSWs) are a population sub-group most affected by the HIV epidemic in India and elsewhere. Despite research and programmatic attention to FSWs, little is known regarding sex workers’ reproductive health and HIV risk in relation to their experiences of violence. This paper therefore aims to understand the linkages between violence and the reproductive health and HIV risks among a group of mobile FSWs in India. Data are drawn from a cross-sectional behavioural survey conducted in 22 districts from four high HIV prevalence states (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu) in India between September 2007 and July 2008. The survey sample included 5,498 FSWs who had moved to at least two different places for sex work in the past two years, and are classified as mobile FSWs in the current study.
