Turning the Tide: An Open Strategy for a Response to AIDS in the Pacific. Commission on AIDS in the Pacific (2009)

The Pacific region covers an immense geographical area and for the most part comprises countries with very small, dispersed and highly mobile populations. Within the Pacific region are some of the world’s smallest, most isolated and least developed countries. Development progress over the past 30 years, particularly in economic growth and poverty reduction, has been uneven across the region; it would be fair to say that it has been slow and even negative in some countries.

Regional Profile

The regional profile presents data collated from published sources in the Asia-Pacific region according to the five areas: HIV prevalence and epidemiological status; Vulnerability and HIV knowledge; Risk behaviours; Socio-economic impact of the epidemic; and National response. The data sources include Epidemiological fact sheets, Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BSS), United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) Report, AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS), Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) and others.
