Funded through AusAID’s Australian Development Research Awards (2009), the Burnet Institute conducted this research to explore the sexual networks of men who have sex with both men and women in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The research aimed to identify network characteristics that promote or block HIV transmission in this network. The qualitative research component aimed to explore the reasons why men have sex with both women and men, the context in which these interactions occur (in terms of meeting partners, negotiation of sex, and where the sex act occurs) and how place and time impact on the choice of partner and or condom use (the intersection of why and where). |

Young people aged 10 to 24 years constitute 28% of Sri Lanka’s total population of 19.1 million. The majority of them fall in the adolescent age group (10-19 years), comprising 19.7% the population1. HIV prevalence among those between 15 and 24 years of age was estimated to be 0.02% among males and 0.03% among females. |

Since 1992, the National AIDS Programme has been carrying out the yearly HIV Sentinel Sero-surveillance (HSS) among selected sentinel groups on different (8) sentinel groups. In fact, HSS is the systematic and regular collection of information on the occurrence, distribution and trends of HIV infection and factors associated with the infection for use in Public Health Action. |

The National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) estimates that approximately 3.9 million people have become infected with HIV in India. (NACO Sentinel Surveillance, 2000). Maharashtra is one of the five states with a high prevalence of HIV. To address the rapidly expanding HIV epidemic in Maharashtra and enable prioritization of geographical areas of vulnerability, a study was undertaken to map commercial sex access points and sites of condom and health service availability.
