Multiple health risk behaviors (HRBs) among adolescents pose a threat to their health, including HIV/ AIDS. Health risk behaviors such as alcohol use, smoking, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors among youth have been shown to co-occur with each others. ![]() | The Republic of Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean located 600 km south of India. Its islands extend from latitude 0° 42 ' 24 " S of the equator to 7 ° 6 ' 35 " N. It consists of 1,192 small islands that form a chain, about 820 km long and 120 km wide, within an area of 90,000 sq km. Only 196 of the islands are officially inhabited, although another 84 islands are used as resorts, and 14 islands serve an industrial purpose. The capital of Malé, with an area of about 2 sq km, accommodates one-third of the country's population of about 300,000. The total land area is estimated to be 300 sq km, of which only 10 percent are suitable for agriculture. Download this publication |

This first BBS, conducted in selected sites, highlights the different factors that could play a role in the development of a future HIV epidemic in the Maldives. These include the presence of ulcerative STI (syphilis) and hepatitis C, overlapping risk populations, low self-risk perception for HIV, a knowledge-practice gap, poor health-seeking behavior and the lack of well-established HIV prevention programs.
