Gains continue to be made in the response to the global HIV epidemic. New HIV infections are falling, fewer people are dying of AIDS-related causes and more people with HIV are living longer.
There were 2.7 million [2.4 million–2.9 million] new HIV infections in 2010, down 21% from the peak of the global epidemic in 1997. HIV incidence has fallen in 33 countries, 22 of them in sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by the AIDS epidemic.

For the Estimates of People Living with HIV in the EPP/Spectrum, the remaining population includes male clients of female sex workers, males and females who used to be part of the most at-risk population (MARP), male and female partners of MARPs, overseas Filipino workers who are at-risk for HIV, and the remaining population who are not included in those already mentioned. The HIV pandemic is one of the greatest challenges that the world faces today. At the end of 2012, 34 million people were estimated to be living with the virus. There were 390,000 new infections among children under the age of 15. Most of these new infections are believed to stem from transmission in utero, during delivery (vertical transmission) or as a result of breast feeding. Download this publication |

The Canada Pakistan HIV/AIDS Surveillance Project (HASP) has been a critical part of the Enhanced Program's HIV response in Pakistan from 2004 to date, and has provided timely and relevant information, by collecting serial data from key populations to describe trends in the HIV epidemic in Pakistan. The broad objective of this research was to provide accurate information on the size and characteristics of key populations including injecting drug users (IDU), female sex workers (FSWs), male sex workers, (MSWs) and hijra sex worker (HSWs) in 19 cities of Pakistan. The methodology was based on a geographical approach, supplemented by network mapping of female sex and hijra sex worker (HSW) networks. Download this publication |

In 2011, the implementation of the second National Strategic Plan on AIDS in Myanmar started. The NSP II covers the period from 2011‐2015. It builds upon the NSP I, but introduces also some changes to the structure and approach. Notably, prevention is further prioritized and aligned to the latest epidemiological data, the provision of ART set at the center of the provision of care and treatment and finally impact mitigation is highlighted as distinct strategic priority. Nepal conducted a mapping and size estimation exercise of Most-at-Risk Population groups (MARPs) in consideration of the epidemic's nature, availability of limited information on the MARP groups of Female Sex Workers (FSWs), Men who have sex with Men (MSMs) and injecting drug user (IDUs) population and the need for a more robust and evidence informed response to HIV for maximizing results.
