UNGASS Country Progress Report: Lao PDR. National Committee for the Control of AIDS Lao PDR and UNAIDS (2010)Lao People’s Democratic Republic is unique in its HIV situation, and can be considered as the only country in the Greater Mekong Region that has maintained a low HIV prevalence in the general population. However Lao PDR’s low prevalence does not mean low risk. As Laos’ commitment to economic expansion transitions the country from “a landlocked to a land‐linked country” the risk to HIV vulnerabilities is evident. Increased mobility across borders coupled with the existing sex worker‐client vulnerabilities and the several emerging high‐risk groups, places Lao PDR on a continued alert of a new HIV threat.

Lao PDR MSM Country Snapshot: August 2009. UNAIDS, Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health, and HIV and AIDS Data Hub for Asia-Pacific (2009)

MSM Country Snapshots for 17 countries have been developed as a collaborative product of UNAIDS Regional Support Team Asia-Pacific, APCOM and the HIV and AIDS Data Hub. Each 1-page snapshot pulls together the latest epidemiological and behavioural response data available from the Data Hub along with information from the Commission on AIDS in Asia Report.

Developed originally for ICAAPIX delegates, the Snapshots are aimed particularly at those who may have little or no knowledge of MSM, TG and HIV. The MSM Country Snapshots and the Regional Picture should not be regarded as “scientific" publications nor are they intended to be exhaustive in scope.

MSM Country Snapshot is being updated regularly on respective country profiles at www.aidsdatahub.org and updated countries reviews will be posted here as they become available.

Integrated Behavioral Biological Surveillance 2008. Center for HIV/AIDS/STI Lao, USAID, FHI, et al (2009)

HIV second generation surveillance is a system of surveillance that conducts repeated surveys of both behaviors, HIV serology and prevalence of STI (which serves as a proximate measure for recent exposure to unprotected sex) among population most at risk of HIV infection. It is also a flexible system that adapts to need of the country. Survey population and sentinel sites can be adjusted from one round of survey to another to take into account the findings from the previous round or a new situation in the country.

HIV and Migration - Country Profile 2009: Lao PDR. HIV and AIDS Data Hub for Asia-Pacific (2009)Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is a source of migrant workers, with Thailand as their main destination country. The long, porous border with Thailand together with Thailand’s demand for low‐skilled labor make it an attractive option for migrant workers. Around 180,000 Lao nationals are registered as workers in Thailand,2 making up 12% of the estimated migrant workforce in Thailand. These figures do not account for the large number of undocumented migrant workers. Migrant workers from Lao PDR are mainly employed in infrastructure projects, domestic and agriculture work, and the fishing industry.
