Epidemiological Fact Sheet on HIV and AIDS Singapore 2008 Update. WHO, UNICEF and UNICEF (2008) Global surveillance of HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a joint effort of UNAIDS and WHO. The UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on Global HIV/AIDS and STI Surveillance, initiated in November 1996, is the coordination and implementation mechanism for UNAIDS and WHO to compile and improve the quality of data needed for informed decisionmaking and planning at national, regional and global levels.

The majority of sex work in India is clandestine due to unfavorable legal environment and discrimination against female sex workers (FSWs). We report data on who these women are and when they get involved with sex work that could assist in increasing the reach of HIV prevention activities for them.

In the last two decades, ‘concentrated epidemics’ of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have established in several high risk groups in Pakistan, including Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) and among men who have sex with men (MSM). To explore the transmission patterns of HIV infection in these major high-risk groups of Pakistan, 76 HIV samples were analyzed from MSM, their female spouses and children, along with 26 samples from a previously studied cohort of IDUs.

the former Soviet Union. UNAIDS identifies the Russian Federation’s HIV epidemic as the largest in Europe, with an estimated 940,000 HIV cases in 2005. There are more people living with HIV in Russia and Ukraine than in the United States and Canada combined.

HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) transmission has been reduced by protected sex and screening of blood products and other body fluids in the developed countries. It has been reported that Pakistan is at high risk of HIV/ AIDS infection but presently the prevalence rate is considerably low. The number of reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Pakistan has been continuously increasing since 1987.

In July 2011, there were 204 new HIV Ab sero-positive individuals confirmed by the STD/AIDS Cooperative Central Laboratory (SACCL) and reported to the HIV and AIDS Registry (Table 1). This was a 56% increase compared to the same period last year (n=131 in 2010) and the highest ever reported in a month.

Behavioral Surveillance Survey in Maharashtra 2001. USAID, Impact, FHI, et al (2001) The present summary report gives the key findings and conclusions of the HIV/AIDS Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS), which was funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and conducted by ORG Center for Social Research (ORG CSR), with technical assistance from Family Health International (FHI).    The study was conducted between October 1999 and March 2001 in selected areas of Maharashtra, including urban areas of Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and both urban and rural areas of Sangli. The main objective of the Behavioral Surveillance Survey was to obtain trend data on HIV-related risk behaviors among selected population groups.
