In 1984, the first case of HIV infection was reported in Hong Kong. From 1984 to March 2008, Hong Kong's Department of Health reported a cumulative total of 3,701 HIV and 951 AIDS cases [1]. The majority of reported HIV cases involved men (81%), and mostly of Chinese origin (67%).
Overall, the HIV prevalence remains low at less than 0.1%. However, it displays concentrated epidemics in certain high-risk groups. Heterosexual transmission has been the most common route for HIV accounting for almost 50% of reported cases as of March 2008, followed by homosexual transmission with 23%. <
