Biography
Dr. Zunyou Wu is Director of the National Center for AIDS/ STD Control and Prevention at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and a former Fogarty trainee and now grantee. Between 1991 and 1995, he trained with the UCLA/ Fogarty International Training Program where he received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology, focus ing on HIV/AIDS. After graduating from the pro gram, Dr. Wu returned to China where he has made a significant contribution to the development of public health policy based on sound scientific principles to prevent HIV infecÂtion among the most vulnerable groups. These include sex workers, drug users, former plasma donors, migrants, and men who have sex with men. In 1995, he and his Ph.D. advi sor Dr. Roger Detels were the first to report an HIV outbreak among commercial plasma donors - a report which uncov ered a national disaster in blood trade and led to an immediate governmental response.
Since 1996, he has conducted a series of demonstration projects targeting sex workers that have led to the development of naÂtional guidelines for HIV preÂvention among sex workers and the national condom promotion program. In recognition of his contribuÂtion to HIV/AIDS prevention in China, Dr. Wu has been awarded several prestigious awards by the Chinese governÂment.
His awards include the State Council Government Special Award in 2004, the Special Contribution of a Young ScienÂtist Award for the Years 2003Â 2004 by the Ministry of Health in 2004, and the National Award for Distinguished Achievement by an Overseas
Returnee jointly awarded by the Departments of Organization, Publicity, and Unification of the Chinese Communist Party and the Ministries of Personnel, Education, and Science and Technology in 2003.
The International Harm ReducÂtion Association awarded him the "2005 International Rolleston Award." Dr. Wu serves on a number of national HIV and drug-related harm reduction advisory boards, and is a consultant to the UN as well as several other
international agencies. He is the recipient of a number of large research grants to investigate HIV prevention strategies in China and will continue to work towards preventing the further spread of HIV in his country.
