Country Profile
The first cases of HIV were identified in Fiji in 1989 in people who had been infected through blood transfusions. Since then, there has been a slow increase in number of HIV cases and by the end of 2007 Fiji has a cumulative figure of 259 HIV positive cases [1].
Overall, the adult prevalence in the country has remained at 0.1%. Heterosexual contact is the main mode of HIV transmission, and accounts for 90% of the HIV-positive people [1].
